Apple said to be planning October 24 launch for new iPads

Apple is planning to launch its new iPads on October 24, according to a new report from MacRumors. Citing a reliable source, the outlet claims that the new tablets expected to be unveiled on Thursday will become available for purchase on Friday of the following week.

The source told the site that Apple was shipping “mass quantities” of a new product to the United States, in preparation for the October 24 launch, although they did not specifically say iPads. That being said, given timing and context, the product is almost certainly tablets.

Apple last week invited members of the press to a low-key event at Town Hall on Thursday, October 16. While the day is an unusual one for the company, it does tend to launch newly unveiled products on Friday of the following week, lending credence to MacRumors’ story.

It’s believed that Apple will use the event to unveil a more powerful iPad Air, with a thinner profile and higher resolution display. It’s also likely that we’ll see a refreshed iPad mini, new iMacs with Retina display, and iPod, Mac mini and Apple TV lines are all due for updates.

iPhone 6 Plus said to be accounting for 60% of iPhone 6 shipments

Sales of the iPhone 6 Plus are exceeding initial expectations, according to a new reportfrom Digitimes. Citing sources with knowledge of part shipments to Apple manufacturers, the outlet says the 6 Plus is expected to account for 60% of total iPhone 6 shipments.
Apparently, Foxconn has been tasked with handling the bulk of production for the iPhone 6 Plus, and Pegatron has the iPhone 6. Digitimes says that part shipments to both suppliers were similar in early September, but have tipped in Foxconn’s favor as of late.
Admittedly Digitimes doesn’t have the most reliable track record in Apple intel, but the data does seem to line up with current demand. For example, shipping times for most iPhone 6 models on Apple’s website are 7-10 days out, while 6 Plus models say 3-4 weeks.
This being said, the shipping delay for the iPhone 6 Plus could be due to a shortage of inventory, which at one point was expected to delay the launch of the device altogether. Here in the US, many carriers reported that the Plus only made up 20% of their initial stock.
On September 22, Apple announced 10+ million iPhone 6 sales during its opening weekend, and it should offer up more details later this month on its earnings call. However, it typically doesn’t break down its smartphone mix, so we may never know the real numbers.

Apple to hold iPad event on Thursday, October 16

Apple is planning an iPad event for Thursday, October 16, according to a new report from Recode’s John Paczkowski. Citing sources familiar with the plans, Paczkowski says the event will be held in the company’s Town Hall Auditorium in Cupertino, and will be used to talk about new iPads, new iMacs and of course, OS X Yosemite.
The report notes that this will be a much more laid-back affair, compared to the spectacle that was Apple’s iPhone 6/Apple Watch event, without any mysterious white structures. This is further evidenced by the venue choice—the Town Hall location is far more intimate than the Flint Center, which could hold over 2,400 occupants.
Admittedly, Thursday seems like an odd day for an Apple event, as the company has typically favored Mondays and Tuesdays in the past for its keynotes. But given Paczkowski’s nearly flawless (possibly flawless) track record for pinpointing unannounced Apple event dates, it’s hard not give his prediction some serious weight.
As for what we expect to see at the event, new iPads will likely be a headliner, withTouch ID Home buttons and possible new gold colorway. The iMac refresh could be a big hit as well, however, as recent reports claim it could finally feature a Retina display. Apple could also mention iOS 8.1, which is slated to land around that time.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus reservations in China reportedly top 4 million

Reservations for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in China have already topped 4 million, reportsTencent. The Chinese media outlet says that demand for the two new handsets is strong in the country, with reservations hitting 2 million in just 6 hours, and 4 million in within the first day.
Note, this number does not include official iPhone 6 pre-orders, which haven’t started yet. Apple announced on September 29 that it had picked up the necessary approval to sell its two new smartphones in China, and told customers that pre-orders would begin Tuesday, October 14.
Both new iPhones will support TD-LTE and FDD-LTE, and be offered by China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom across mainland China. China Mobile and China Unicom are among the top largest carriers in the world, with 800 million and 300 million subscribers, respectively.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus officially launch in China on October 17, one month after going on sale here in the US. A lot of eyes will be keeping watch of the sales numbers there, as the country is a very important market for Apple, and the two devices have been extremely successful thus far.
